Living with handmade ceramics

A few gentle habits to help you enjoy your favourite pieces for years.

Treat every piece as an individual.

Handmade ceramics can vary in clay body, glaze and firing. Follow the care instructions supplied with your particular piece; do not assume that a decorative vessel is suitable for food or water.

Keep cleaning gentle.

Unless your maker advises otherwise, wash gently by hand with mild detergent and a soft sponge. Avoid abrasive cleaners, sudden temperature changes and impacts against hard surfaces. Let pieces dry fully before storing.

Ask before using heat.

Check with the studio before putting a piece in a microwave, oven or dishwasher. For decorative or unglazed work, start with a soft, dry cloth and ask the maker for specific cleaning guidance.
