From a handful of earth to an object

A closer look at the patient rhythm behind ceramic making.

It begins with a conversation.

An object begins with an idea, a sketch or the feel of clay in the hand. A maker might pinch, coil, build with slabs or throw on a wheel. Each approach leaves a different rhythm in the form.

Time is part of the material.

As clay firms up, a piece can be trimmed, joined or decorated. Drying takes care and patience: uneven drying can create stresses, especially around handles and joins.

The kiln changes everything.

Firing transforms clay into ceramic. Depending on the process, a first firing may be followed by glazing and another firing. The finished surface reflects the choices made along the way, and sometimes a welcome surprise.
